Matthew 12:1-13

The Sabbath was given to man to point to the rest of Salvation, which Jesus the Messiah was now fulfilling and inviting people into. The Pharisees were interested only in self-righteousness, not the true righteousness that the law pointed to. They neglected to see that life was of more value than religious ceremonies of the law, and that doing good was always lawful on the Sabbath. Most of all, they failed to see that Jesus was Master of the Sabbath and was replacing the temple and its whole system with a new and better relationship to God.
