Matthew 26:56b-58, 69-75, 27:3-10

Both Peter and Judas sinned greatly against Jesus. Both felt a deep regret for their sins against Christ.  However, Peter found forgiveness and eternal life while Judas found only despair and eternal damnation. The difference was in the source and direction of their sorrow, their belief that God is merciful, and ultimately, the intercession of Christ. When we sin, we must hear God’s word condemn our sin, turn to God in sorrow and repentance, and not despair of his mercy.
